"American Avocet"

A graceful shorebird that likes shallow alkaline or brackish water, the American Avocet is found in central and western Nebraska during the summer, and during migration can also be found in the eastern section. It likes to be around shallow prairie ponds, lakes and wetlands, and prefers saline, brackish water. Armand's rendering depicts the Avocet selecting his dinner from the insects that inhabit the waters' surface. The Avocet's distinctive coloring and long legs make him easy to recognize.
