Back to Nebraska Wetland Birds Set
"Killdeer" Although a shorebird, the killdeer can also be found far from water in vacant fields or along railroad tracks. Killdeer winter in Mexico and Central America. Killdeer are best known for their "broken wing display." When it sees a predator (including humans) in the area of its nest, it feigns a broken wind, limping around just a few feet in front of the intruder, drawing it away from the nest. When the killdeer decides there's no longer danger of the nest being discovered, it suddenly "recovers," and flies away. Armand has drawn the killdeer where it stood in a still section of the Papio Creek. This pencil drawing of the killdeer is available in the Nebraska Wetland Birds set of notecards, but can also be ordered individually as matted prints or framed and matted prints.
